Laila Marie Crombez, 92 years, of
Monroe, died Friday, December 23, while under the care of
Heartland Hospice. Friends may call at the Capaul Funeral Home,
Ida, Thursday, December 29, from 2-8 PM, with a Rosary Service
at 7 PM. She will lie in state at Light of Christ Catholic
Parish, Deerfield, Friday from 10 AM until the Mass of
Resurrection, at 11 AM. Fr. Jack Loughran will officiate. Burial
will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Petersburg.
Born August 16, 1919, in Rawson, OH, Laila was the daughter
of Volney and Mary (VerStraete) Payne. She was a Registered
Nurse, and was employed by Mercy Memorial Hospital, Monroe, for
twenty-two years, retiring in 1979. She had previously worked at
Bixby Hospital, Adrian.
Laila and Rene G. Crombez were married June 27, 1942, in
Deerfield. He died September 27, 2006. Laila was a member of St.
Joseph Catholic Church, Ida, St. Irene's Ladies Circle, St.
Irene's Altar Society, and the Floral City Stamp Club. She loved
making Wedding Cakes for the family weddings over the years.
Survivors include: son, Rene "Terry" Crombez; daughter,
Corliss (Ron) Heiden; brother, Oliver "Bill" Payne; sister, Mary
Alice Lemerand, and twin sister, Leila DeBacker; nine
grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and eight
great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her
husband, a daughter, Mary Crombez, a brother, and a sister.
