Thomas Earl Murphy was born on March 7, 1889 in Lenawee County, Michigan as the son of Jenne (Anderson) and Thomas Murphy.

He graduated from Tecumseh High School and attended Detroit Business College.

On June 12, 1911, he married Carrie Palmer.
