Here are a couple of the envelopes from the series of letters that were sent from German relatives to Rika (Mrs August) Heiden, in the early 1920s. That is the hand written address that successfully moved the letter from northern Germany to rural America over 100 years ago.

M. (Mrs) August Heiden
Ide (Ida) Monro (Monroe) C. (County) Mich (Michigan)
Nord (North) Americka (America)

While working on the 1995 Heiden Family book, I sent a large envelope of information to one of my aunts who had lived at the same address for many years. I accidentally transposed two of the numbers on the street address and the envelope was returned to me undelivered. The letter addressed as shown above came from Germany in the 1920s and was successfully delivered. Progress?

Maurer in German means bricklayer which is the trade August learned back in Germany.
