The third child in
the Edna (Heiden) and Henry Berns' family was Doris Mayetta (Drake, Berns) Althoff who was born Friday, August 19, 1927 in Toledo,
Ohio. Doris was the daughter of Alonzo and Verna May Drake. Verna was the older sister of Edna's brother-in-law, Virgil "Charlie" Fuller.
The Drakes were unable to maintain a home for their three children
during the Great Depression so Henry and Edna took Doris into their
family and adopted her on August 8, 1930.
On August 9, 1947, she married
Gerhardt Althoff in a ceremony at
St
Matthew Lutheran Church. They had four children.
Her daughter, Miriam, was the subject of a
newspaper article in 1958 about a letter she received from then Vice
President, Richard Nixon. At that time, the Althoffs were living at
14265 Dunbar Road near Ida, Michigan. Doris was killed in an automobile accident on Lewis Avenue just north of Ida on Sunday, December 27, 1964. She is buried at
St
Matthew Lutheran Church Cemetery. Doris was 37 years old at the time of
her death. Gerhardt was born Wednesday, December 12, 1917 in Upper Sandusky, Ohio.
He was a graduate of Perrysburg High School in Ohio and served three
years in the Pacific theater of WW II. After the war, he worked as a
mechanic at LaSalle Motor Clinic.
He died on Monday, November 11, 1991 in Kerrville, Texas at the age of 73. Gerhardt is buried in Fort Sam Houston Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. |

Living at
11501
Dixon Road in Raisinville Township, were Henry
(34), Edna (30), Walter (11), Lavern (9) and Doris (3).
Henry's father, Fred (79) is living there too. |

Still at the rented farm at 11501 Dixon, the family
consisted of Henry (45), Edna (40), Walter (21), Doris (12),
Eva (8) and Laura Lee (6). Their last child, Linda, was born
in September after the census was taken. Henry's
income was listed as about $400 per year. |

Ida with husband Gerhardt (32) and daughters Miriam and
Verna. Gerhardt was working at Igenfritz Nursery. |
