Established in 1860, St Matthew Lutheran Church was the site of many occasions for the members of the William Carl and Mary (Rambow) Heiden family. Weddings, Baptisms, Confirmations, Funerals, Sunday School, Summer Bible School, Catechism, Communion, Church Services and the annual Christmas Eve program all occurred here. In addition, Luther League, wedding receptions, birthday parties, Dart Ball Leagues and other social events took place in the hall.

In 1964, St Matthew and St Mark's Lutheran Church in Ida decided to merge. They then built a new facility on Lewis Avenue just north of Ida and named it Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. It is located in Section 13 of Raisinville Township, Monroe County, Michigan.

The church was often mistakenly called St. Matthew's. At times, news articles or obituaries would throw in the word "Evangelical" but this was not correct either. The congregation was organized in 1860 at a meeting in the historic Peter Seitz's Tavern and Stagecoach Inn in nearby Grape. In the first few years, the congregation held services at Bridge School  while the church was being built.

Since the merger, the church building has been used by other denominations and the spire has been removed from the roof. However, the cemetery behind the building is still owned and maintained by Prince of Peace. As of 2020, the building is known as the Grape Missionary Baptist Church.

The cemetery behind the former St Matthew Lutheran Church is the resting place for many, many Heidens, Rambows and their relatives. Across the fence to the right side of the pictures (north) is the Rath Cemetery. Since the merger of St Matthew with another church in the 1960s, this may also be called Prince of Peace Lutheran Church cemetery. For a list of those buried in this cemetery, Click Here.

This is a 2024 picture of the building which is now the Grape Missionary Baptist Church.
