The third child born to William Carl and Mary (Rambow) Heiden was a son they named Leo William. He was born at the Albright farm on South Custer Road on Sunday, September 7, 1902.

Leo attended nearby King School and then Bridge School through the 8th grade after the family moved to 8861 Dixon Road.

On Saturday, June 23, 1928, Leo married Lucille Irene Smith, daughter of Conrad and Mary Folk Smith. Lucille was born on Friday, April 6, 1906, in nearby Frenchtown Township. Lee and Lou had three children.

For a while after their marriage, Leo and Lucille lived with Leo's sister, Edna (Heiden) Berns at 11501 Dixon Road. They then moved to a house on the Wakefield Farm at 8750 Dixon Road to the east of William Carl and Mary's house and this was where their daughter, Mary Lou (Heiden) Opfermann was born in 1929.

Next they moved into the west side of William Carl and Mary's house at 8861 Dixon where their first son, David, Sr. was born in 1935. From there, they took up residence at the back of a general store which was located on the northwest corner of the intersection of Ida Maybee Road/ Lewis Avenue and South Custer Road. The address of the store which no longer exists was 8201 South Custer and this was where their second son, Roger, Sr. was born in 1939.

At one time, according to William Frank Heiden, Leo purchased one of the lots on the north side of Dixon Road across from their father's property at 8861. There were eventually three lots sold and Leo's was the plot to the east of what became 8864 Dixon Road. Leo and Lucille planned to build there but eventually sold it to a couple from Toledo named Jerry and Annabel Feeback who used it as a weekend retreat. [See Dixon Road Lots]

Finally, they purchased the family home at 7758 South Custer Road, Raisinville Township in February of 1946. Leo worked for 33 years in the Corrugator Department of the Consolidated Paper Company in Monroe. He retired in 1967 at the age of 65.

They were both active in the St Matthew Lutheran Church and later the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Ida.

Leo Heiden died on Sunday, September 9, 1979 at the age of 77. He is buried in the St Matthew Lutheran Church cemetery . Lucille passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 1998 at the age of 91 and she is also buried at the St Matthew Lutheran Church cemetery . At the time of Lucille's death, they had 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

I don't remember much before I began school but was told we lived in several places because of the Great Depression. Dad worked for different farmers and didn't have steady work. When I was six we lived on the west side of Grandma and Grandpa's house on Dixon Road and lived there until William got married in 1938 and needed the house because he worked the farm so we moved to South Custer Road behind the grocery store.

At this time, Wm Carl (36) and Mary (32) were living at 8861 Dixon Road which they had purchased on April 1, 1909. Their children included Edna (11), Carl (9), Leo (7), Lester (5), Hilda (3) and Mildred (1). Note: At that time, Dixon Road was called River Road.
