 Freidrich L.
"Fred" Rambow
was born on Saturday, December 25, 1869 in
Gross Wokern, Germany.
He was the first child of
Heinrich and
Wilhelmina (Milhan) Rambow and came with them to
America in 1874.
He married
Emma Louise Westpfahl on December 23,
1898 in her hometown of Olin, Iowa. We have no idea why Fred would
have been in Iowa at that time.
They were living in LaSalle Township at the birth of the
first of their three children, Esther, in 1899.
Emma was also born in Germany and came to the U.S. in
1881. Her family settled in Olin, Iowa and that is
where she met Fred.
Fred Rambow was born in Germany. Therefore, during
the years of World War I (1914-1918), he and about
200,000 other "enemy aliens" were required to
register and receive permits to be allowed to enter
certain U.S. government facilities including the
Post Office. He was
issued a permit 1917.
The 1940 U.S. Census, has
Fred and Emma Rambow living at
2041 Rambow Drive on what would have been the
western edge of the City of Monroe in Frenchtown
Township. It was still
rural at that time and Fred was listed as a school
janitor and farmer. The place was referred to as
Patterson Gardens and the whole area is now within
the boundary of the City of Monroe.
On the 1950 U.S. Census, they were still living at this
address. Fred was 80 and Emma 72 at the time. Other
sources say that they lived here from 1913 to 1954
before they moved to Ida. At the time of Fred's death, he was living with his daughter,
Esther (Rambow) Miller at 7730 South Custer Road..
Friedrich died on October 3, 1959 at 89 years of age. Emma who was born December 30,
1877 in Mecklenburg, Germany died on February 8, 1962. She
was 84 at the time of her death and also living with
her daughter, Esther Miller,
They had 7 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren
at the time of Emma's death.
