Sometime after her graduation from Dundee High School in 1940, Wilma moved to Detroit and lived at the YWCA (Young Women's Christian Association) while working as a teletype operator for Ford Motor Company. She was quite a fan of the Detroit Red Wings during her time in Detroit. For 18 months, she worked as an operator for Western Union.
